“Cardiovascular disease ranks among the top 10 causes of death in Haiti, and accounts for 29% of deaths. At the “Hôpital Universitaire de la Paix” in Haiti, located in Delmas, those numbers reflect our reality. Heart disease accounts for the majority of our hospitalizations and consultations. We receive patients that travel far distances to seek medical care because of severely limited access to quality healthcare in Haiti. There are significant deficits in cardiovascular education throughout the country especially regarding management of patients with cardiovascular disease. Due to this lack of education, unfortunately, sometimes, mistakes are made and inadequate or inappropriate management is given. This is where the ICARDS-Haiti program via the Global MedEd Network comes in with all its importance. When it comes to taking care of patients with cardiovascular disease, it must be done based on reliable recommendations and evidence. Through ICARDs-Haiti we receive guidance on the choice of medications, their doses, lifestyle modifications, and special considerations to optimize care. Based on my observation as chief resident and leader among my class, the impact of of ICARDS-Haiti at “Hôpital Universitaire de la Paix” is impressive. Residents can now handle cardiovascular disease management much better, especially the junior residents (PGY-1 and 2). With these intensive courses, I predict that by the time the junior residents become seniors, they will manage cardiovascular patients with better knowledge and more confidence. To go further, if more doctors, mostly those involved in primary care, are able to participate in this program, we could improve the health and care provided to our population and offer more optimal treatment. “
